Image Transformation Therapy

What is Image Transformation Therapy?

Image Transformation Therapy (ImTT) is a gentle therapeutic approach that aims to eliminate traumatic memories, disruptive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. ImTT was developed by Dr. Robert Miller in 2011.

ImTT utilizes a guided breathing-visualization protocol to release various components which fuel traumatic memories. The result is that traumatic memories can be processed quickly and completely with fewer complications and with less resistance to treatment.

ImTT gets to the root causes of psychological issues and eliminates them without the need to relive the experience or the memory.

ImTT challenges the conventional wisdom that feelings have to be experienced intensely in order to be released. In fact, clients are specifically instructed to not experience feelings intensely during an ImTT session.

How Does Image Transformation Therapy Work?

Feelings and memories stored in the mind and body are released in a steady and measured manner via a simple guided breathing and visualization exercise.

All traumatic memories contain various multi-sensory parts including emotions, thoughts, and sensations. These can include feelings of terror, pain, shock, guilt, and shame. Memories can also contain odors, tastes, sounds, and, of course, the image of the memory itself. In an ImTT session, the therapist guides clients to methodically release each of these components which deenergizes the memory to a place of neutrality. What results is a new sense of self emerges and a person can finally be free of the grip of the traumatic memory and the hold it has had on their mind, body, and life.

It is not uncommon for clients of ImTT to report feeling lighter and more capable of engaging in life, work, and relationships in new and more empowered ways.

What Issues Can Image Transformation Therapy Help With?

Since ImTT does not heavily rely on verbal dialogue and needing to talk extensively about the presenting issue or problem, it is appropriate to use with individuals of all ages including children, teens, and adults.

ImTT is effective for a range of trauma related issues including PTSD, anxiety, depression, childhood emotional neglect, and addiction.

With regards to trauma, ImTT releases the intensity, vividness, and emotional charge surrounding the memory. Ultimately, the memory becomes something that happened in the past versus something that is constantly being relived and re-experienced.

For depression, ImTT releases the pain, heaviness, and despair which is often associated with depression as well as treating its root causes.

Similarly, with anxiety, ImTT identifies the root causes and addresses different types of anxiety including social anxiety, panic attacks, and general anxiety.

These are just some examples of how ImTT works to treat painful issues. Life-changing outcomes are possible even after years of trying other treatments and therapy.

What Is The General Format And Structure Of An Image Transformation Therapy Session?

The format and structure of each session will vary depending on your individual needs and goals for treatment. Generally speaking, if a specific traumatic memory is being addressed, I will help you identify what the different emotions, thoughts, and sensations of the memory you find distressing. As we uncover this, I will lead you through the visualization protocol to support you in releasing each emotion, thought, and sensation you find distressing about the memory including the visual image of the memory itself. Relatively quickly, you will begin to notice the emotional charge of the distressing memory beginning to fade and the emotional pain you’ve been carrying will also lift.

Is Image Transformation Therapy Right For Me?

ImTT is a great fit for individuals who have found traditional therapies to be ineffective and are seeking much needed relief. ImTT is especially helpful for those who are:

  • Open-minded and curious. For individuals who have tried traditional therapy and are seeking new ways to overcome trauma and trauma-related issues, ImTT may be a good fit.

  • Not wanting to have to go into the story of the trauma. Telling a trauma story can trigger feelings of overwhelm and unbearable distress. ImTT does not require you to talk in detail about the traumatic event in order to get positive results.

  • Enjoy visualization exercises or interested in learning how. ImTT utilizes a surprisingly simple yet effective guided visualization process which requires a basic level of concentration and visualization skills.

How Effective Is Image Transformation Therapy?

Although ImTT is a fairly new treatment approach, Dr. Miller has been successfully using this method in his practice for 13 years and, since its inception, has trained numerous therapists world-wide. Therapists trained in ImTT consistently speak about the incredible results they have observed with their own clients. Therapists are reporting that clients are getting better faster, that issues and traumas that were not resolving with other therapies are doing so with ImTT treatment, and that clients are no longer feeling defined or limited by their trauma and instead feeling lighter, freer, and more resilient.

Currently, Dr. Miller is working in collaboration with the University of California San Diego to study the effectiveness of ImTT in the treatment of PTSD. As of today, the results are looking very promising.

Why I Got Trained In Image Transformation Therapy And Why I Love Using This Approach With Clients

In 2021, I pursued training in ImTT because I was seeking treatment methods to help clients overcome trauma and PTSD and was intrigued by the simplicity and gentleness of this approach. I have completed both the Basic and Advanced ImTT Training as well as the Feeling-State Image Protocol which focuses on treating behavioral and substance addictions.

Since completing my training, I have had the opportunity to use this approach with countless clients over the years and have been quite impressed with the results. Clients have reported that, at times, the method feels almost magical in its ability to resolve long held traumas. In fact, I have been so inspired by ImTT’s ability to resolve trauma and its negative effects that I have offered this method in an intensive format for clients who are interested in a more rapid approach to releasing trauma.
