Therapy For Teens

Are You A Teen Or The Parent Of A Teen Who’s Been Feeling Stressed, Anxious, Or Depressed?

Do you feel overwhelmed by worries or fears? Are anxious thoughts taking over your mind more often than not?

Did something disturbing happen to you and you haven’t been able to get it out of your head?

Are you experiencing any peer pressure or bullying at school?

Does shyness and discomfort keep you from forming friendships easily?

Maybe, there are challenges in your home life which have been really affecting you but you haven’t known how to talk about it such as a divorce, a recent loss in the family, or a family member struggling with their health.

Being a teen comes with problems you may not have expected and don’t know how to deal with. Sometimes you feel like you’re carrying the world on your shoulders and there doesn’t seem any end in sight. You’re not sure where to turn, who to talk to, or even how to talk about everything you’re feeling.

You feel isolated and alone. Your days swing from either being stressed and anxious all the time or you’re struggling to get out of bed and put one foot in front of the other. Every day feels like an effort to just get through. It shouldn’t be this hard to be you but it is. You’re trying your best to cope with everything but you’re not coping very well.

As a parent, you see your teen struggling and don’t know how to help them

You can remember a happier time and now they’ve become so isolated and withdrawn. They’re not participating in family or social activities the way they used to. You’ve tried talking to them but they don’t want to open up to you about what they’re going through. You can see their unhappiness but don’t know how to fix it. You’re really worried about them and wish you could help them out of the pain and discomfort they’re in.

Teens Are Experiencing Mental Health Challenges More Than Ever Before

With the weight of everything going on in the world in the past few years—from the pandemic to mass shootings alongside the everyday pressures of school and social dynamics—it’s no wonder teens are feeling the burden of it all. All of this can really take a toll on their mental health.

In fact, in the 10 years leading up to the pandemic, there has been a 40% increase in young people experiencing persistent sadness and hopelessness. In 2023, over 2.7 million youth (ages 12-17) experienced major depression. Youth statistics for anxiety are not much better. Approximately 5.8 million children (including teens) ages 3-17 were diagnosed with anxiety during the years of 2016-2019. It’s a pretty sobering picture.

As I’m sure you’re aware, poor mental health can impact teens in many areas including academic performance, relationships with family and friends, self-esteem, decision making, and overall quality of their life. Mental health challenges can affect even the most seemingly “together” teen so it’s important not to overlook any changes in behavior or mood.

Early intervention and support can make a world of difference in your teen’s well-being and future success. Working with an experienced teen therapist can provide the hope and guidance your teen needs to move forward.

Therapy for Teens Will Help You Understand Yourself Better And Feel More Confident, Leading To A Healthier & Happier You

The good news is you don't have to navigate these challenges alone. Therapy can be an incredibly helpful place for you to learn coping skills, gain self-awareness, and break through stuck places. It’s a judgment-free zone to share and untangle what’s in your head and heart with support and guidance along the way.

For parents, if you're considering having your child work with a teen counselor, know that taking that first step to seek help is a powerful act of love and support. And remember, it's okay to not have all the answers – that's what therapy is for. Together, we can help your teen navigate the ups and downs of adolescence and emerge stronger, happier, and more resilient on the other side.

As an experienced teen therapist, I have helped teens who are:

  • Consumed with fears or negative thoughts

  • Sorting through challenges around gender identity or sexual orientation

  • Trying to move past a traumatic event

  • Feeling stuck

  • Experiencing uncertainty and low-self esteem

  • Struggling with feelings of anxiety or depression

I’ve supported a number of individuals move past these issues and achieve a sense of peace and optimism about their future. In addition, teen counseling is great for such things as social anxiety, managing emotions, difficult life transitions, and reconnecting with lost motivation in order to get back on track at school.

It’s very common for your struggles to feel like a massive tangle of too many things to sort through and figure out. In therapy, I will help you get to the heart of the issue(s) bothering you and develop a clear plan to get you where you want to be. Together, we can make the impossible manageable.

Sessions will be spent in a number of ways depending on your needs. Throughout our time together, I will provide feedback, emotional support, and guidance. This could include helping you develop awareness and understanding of what’s causing you to feel stuck, as well as what you’ll need to do to get unstuck. I will share practical tools and strategies for you to use and practice both in session and in your life.

Even though therapy can be challenging, many teens find that having a better handle on the issues troubling them leads to a stronger ability to flourish and thrive in all aspects of their lives. You, too, can move through this life stage with more ease and peace of mind in order to gain lasting insights, transformation, and skills along the way.

You May Still Feel Unsure And Have Questions About Teen Counseling

  • It depends on your age, the issues you're dealing with, and what you prefer. While some teens may choose to involve their parents in therapy sessions, others may prefer to keep their sessions private. I will go over confidentiality and boundaries with you during your first session, and we can discuss together how involved your parents will be in your therapy.

  • It's okay to take your time opening up about sensitive or difficult topics. I will never pressure you to talk about anything you're not ready to discuss. Building trust takes time and I will work with you at your own pace. I want you to know that you're in control of what you share in therapy.

  • Plenty of people go to therapy, including teens just like you. It's a brave and proactive step towards taking care of your mental health, and it doesn't make you any different from anyone else. In fact, many people find that therapy helps them feel more connected to others and less alone in their struggles. You're not weird or unusual for seeking help – you're taking control of your well-being.
